Who Are We?

Vintage Card Traders (VCT) was founded on July 23, 1999 by Dan Austin. Dan had a vision of uniting a group of people who were banded together by their love of collecting old baseball cards. The group was formed to promote trading of cards between members in a "safe and trusted" environment. Members are encouraged to trade wantlists and swap cards through the mail, much like we did in person when we were kids. VCT has come a long way since its inception and has grown into a fantastic group of collectors who are kind, generous, and easy to trade with. VCT has since expanded to include collectors of vintage football, basketball and hockey cards as well!

What's It Take To Join?

So, you want to join this rag-tag group of traders, do you? Good for you! Before you get yourself "in with the wrong crowd", you should ask yourself if you fulfill the first requirement for membership. Potential VCT members’ primary collecting focus should be on pre-1980 or "vintage" sportscards. There is no reason why you can't collect other cards as well, but if you mainly collect non-sport, NASCAR, Pokemon, etc., or you drool at the thought of the next ultra-glossy, high-dollar insert you might pull from your '99 Super Topps Mega Chrome pack that you just picked up at the local card shop, then VCT probably isn't for you. If, however, you love collecting older baseball, football, basketball or hockey cards, then you're in the right place! Most VCT members collect low to mid grade stuff. If you are very "condition sensitive" and only collect high grade and/or slabbed material, this is probably not the right group for you. The second requirement for membership is that you must complete a successful trade with at least two current members, and receive their "thumbs up" after the deal (expressed in an e-mail to the VCT membership coordinator). The third requirement for membership is that all prospective members must have an online webpage that can be accessed by the group. No exceptions! If you need suggestions on where/how to set one up, let us know.

Any prospective member who meets all of these requirements will be asked to send in their "member profile" (see examples below). Once this is received by the VCT membership coordinator, they will become a "prospect" for a short period of time (usually 1-2 weeks) while feedback is sought from current members about the prospect. If there is no negative input on the prospect, they will be converted to a "probationary member". The probationary period ends after 6 months of membership in good standing, after which full membership rights are granted.

So, if you would like to join this great group of online traders, get in contact with some of our members and set up a swap. Once the trading is over, ask the members you have traded with to send an e-mail to the VCT membership coordinator which recommends you for membership. That's all there is to it! Even if you don't want to become a member right now, feel free to contact any of our members to set up a trade. We hope to be trading with you soon!

VCT Policy on Minors - VCT is intended as a group for adults (18 years and older), so at this time we have chosen not to offer membership to those under 18 years of age.

Condition Sensitivity		Most of his sets are "beater sets" in which he accepts any condition, although he does have a couple of sets that are VG or better, and as sets get closer to the 80's, some are Ex, ExMt, and NrMt. All sets are marked what condition he accepts for that particular set.

He is a big fan of pre-WWII cards, including Goudeys, Play Ball and T-205 and T-206. In the post-1970 era, Phil's main interest is "oddball" sets: food issues, inserts, game cards and the like. If it's an oddball set and not on the list, ask. You never know what may interest him. Collecting Interests		Adam is a set builder who sticks primarily with Topps. He collects both older and newer cards, currently from 1970 on up, but hopes to work his way into the 60's at some point. Most of the newer sets are finished, and most of his want lists are 1970's football and 1971 and 1970 baseball. He has some limited hockey interests as well, although baseball and football are his main focus. He had doubles to trade from almost every year from 70 on up, and even some older cards he might part with for the right stuff. and if your looking for really nice cards in return, you might not find them here (except for newer stuff).

Collecting Interests		Steve loves building sets. He's finished putting together his Topps baseball sets from 1954-1979 plus many newer ones. He still needs help with OPC, Fleer, Leaf and Bowman sets. He doesn't really care for regional stuff or oddball stuff right now, though as he runs out of other stuff to look for, he will consider it. Because he likes building sets, he's expanded into older football, basketball and hockey as well. His dupes box currently has about 4,000 baseball cards including stars and hi numbers. Mainly, his collection (and his dupes) are vg and below. He is not fussy about the cards he receives, though he really doesn't like writing on the front. His main interest is getting the cards he needs to finish his sets. He doesn't mind sending more than he receives and, in fact, usually trys to.

Collecting Interests		Sam collects a wide variety of cards and sets - in all four major sports. Topps and Upper Deck. In addition, Sam is working on several special collections, including autographs of members of Detroit teams who won championships, and any pre-1950 Detroit card of nearly any type, PlayBall, Goudey, Bowman, and tobacco cards. It's a tough wantlist to hit, but he'd take any new UV/GW stuff by a Detroit player (any sport) or a Michigan State Spartan (in an MSU jersey). He also collects all things Al Kaline.
Condition Sensitivity		Generally VG-EX or better, but Sam is not too particular about ink stains especially on the backs or sharp corners. He prefers cards to be crease free, but on pre-war stuff, whatever is better than no card at all. Upgrades he prefers EX+.

Other Online Baseball Card Trading Groups

• Old Baseball Cards (OBC) - The oldest and most exclusive of all of the online baseball card groups, with roots stretching back to 1992. Members must be primarily vintage baseball card collectors. Collecting too much modern, or "UV infected", stuff is generally frowned upon. OBCers tend to trade less and focus more on sending cards to other members "just because they need them". OBCers are very friendly, generous and extremely knowledgable about vintage cards.
• Old Card Traders (OCT) - OCT strikes up a nice balance between the heavily "modern card" oriented TB and the strong vintage orientation of OBC and VCT. Although there are plenty of vintage collectors, many of the members also collect modern stuff, and some focus exclusively on it. OCT relies on "trader points" to insure that its members stay active.
• Trading Bases (TB) - Although there are some vintage traders here, most of the members are focused heavily on the newer stuff, so if you are a "modern age" collector who enjoys putting together the latest sets, collecting inserts, rookies and more, this might be just the place for you.
• O-Pee-Chee Central (OPCC) - An informal group for collectors of vintage OPC baseball cards to swap and make group purchases.
• The Canadian Sports Card Traders Group (CSCT) - A Canadian-based group, with a heavier focus on hockey. Uses "trader points" to keep members active, much like OCT.
• Christian Card Collectors (CCC) - A place for Christians who love collecting trading cards to meet and use their hobby in a beneficial manner.
